Our first crossing on the Penobscot Narrows Bridge

The Penobscot Narrows Bridge replaced the venerable Waldo Hancock Bridge where Route 1 crosses the Penobscot River from Prospect to Verona Island, Maine, on December 30, 2006. We crossed it for the first time two days later on our way south. It was very rainy, so we'll have to wait for another trip to be amazed by the fabulous views out to Penobscot Bay.

Our last crossing on the Fairy Bridge

As the daylight faded in Downeast Maine, we made crossed the tired, old, but still delicately beautiful suspension bridge over the Penobscot to Verona Island on U.S Route 1. The next day, the new cable-stayed bridge seen to the right was opened. We crossed this bridge a gazillion times on our way to and back from Castine, Surry, and Sedgwick, Maine, over many years.
