Bacillaria paxillifera Just Slides Along

Video duration: 56 seconds

The colonial diatom Bacillaria paxillifera is made up of many individual diatom cells that stick together along their sides... For reasons known only to this lovely critter, those individual cells slide against each other like a carpentier's rule: Extending way out in one direction, then collapsing, then extending way out in another. Well, it takes all kinds, even in the microworld.
